in the hope of winning Jonathan over to his side and making peace with the Jews before Alexander made a treaty with them against him.

for he said to himself, “Let us act first to make peace with him before he makes peace with Alexander against us,

He was thinking, "Jonathan could not have forgotten the terrible things I did to him and his brothers and his nation. If I don't hurry and make peace with him, he will join forces with Alexander and attack."
