Husband, in our old Saxon speech meant houseband — the stay of the house; and a wife should be a "help meet" for the husband. She should be a "keeper at home." Phidias, when he depicted a woman, made her to sit under a snail shell, this signifying, that like the snail she should never be far away from her home.
