Clarke's Commentary on the BiblePhinehas, the son of Eleazar - This was the same Phinehas who is mentioned Numbers 25:7, and consequently these transactions must have taken place shortly after the death of Joshua. Treasury of Scripture Knowledge Phinehas It is evident, from this mention of Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, that these transactions must have taken place not long after the death of Joshua.
