that he took a thick cloth There is a considerable degree of ambiguity in this passage. The pronoun [he] is generally referred to Hazael; but Dr. Geddes and others are decidedly of the opinion, that we should understand by it {Ben-hadad}; who, encouraged by the favourable answer of Elisha, as reported to Hazael, adopted a violent remedy to all the heat of his fever, and put over his face the {keever, or fly-net}. The Story of Hazael
'So Hazael went to meet him, and took a present with him, even of every good thing of Damascus, forty camels' burden, and came and stood before him, and said, Thy son Ben-hadad king of Syria hath sent me to thee, saying, Shall I recover of this disease? 10. And Elisha said unto him, Go, say unto him, Thou mayest certainly recover: howbeit the Lord hath shewed me that he shall surely die. 11. Kings
The book[1] of Kings is strikingly unlike any modern historical narrative. Its comparative brevity, its curious perspective, and-with some brilliant exceptions--its relative monotony, are obvious to the most cursory perusal, and to understand these things is, in large measure, to understand the book. It covers a period of no less than four centuries. Beginning with the death of David and the accession of Solomon (1 Kings i., ii.) it traverses his reign with considerable fulness (1 Kings iii.-xi.),
