Clarke's Commentary on the BibleEven so hath the Lord ordained - This is evidently a reference to our Lord's ordination, Matthew 10:10 : The workman is worthy of his meat. And Luke 10:7 : For the laborer is worthy of his hire. And in both places it is the preacher of the Gospel of whom he is speaking. It was a maxim among the Jews, "that the inhabitants of a town where a wise man had made his abode should support him, because he had forsaken the world and its pleasures to study those things by which he might please God and be useful to men." See an ordinance to this effect in the tract Shabbath, fol. 114. Treasury of Scripture Knowledge ordained. See on ver. 1 Corinthians 9:4 Have we not power to eat and to drink? Matthew 10:10 Nor money for your journey, neither two coats, neither shoes, nor yet staves: for the workman is worthy of his meat. Luke 10:7 And in the same house remain, eating and drinking such things as they give: for the laborer is worthy of his hire... Galatians 6:6 Let him that is taught in the word communicate to him that teaches in all good things. 1 Timothy 5:17 Let the elders that rule well be counted worthy of double honor, especially they who labor in the word and doctrine. 1 Corinthians 9:14 Parallel Commentaries
