They perceived (ἐπέγνωσαν)

Clearly perceived. See on Matthew 7:16, and Luke 1:4.

He beckoned (ἦν διανεύων)

Better Rev., continued making signs. Again the participle with the finite verb, denoting frequent repetition of the same signs. Wyc., was beckoning.
